Thinking about starting Karate ?

Most people know little about karate and good advice is to come and watch a training session. We give you two free introductory sessions which gives you time to find out if karate is for you so why not bring a friend along too and give it a try!

Apart from acquiring the skills to defend yourself, the many benefits of learning karate include achieving a high level of fitness, improved flexibility and greater co-ordination.

Novices can turn up in a track suit or loose clothing but eventually will need to purchase a karate suit. Classes start with a warm up & stretching routine then the session commences usually including the three main elements of karate; basic techniques (Kihon) sparring (Kumite) and fighting forms (Kata)

Our Shotokan karate classes are enjoyed by students of all abilities from 8 yrs old to adults of all ages. Lessons are well structured, striving for perfection of technique, spirit and self discipline. The Old Basing Karate Club is part of Seishinkai Shotokan Karate International, a well known and respected association headed by Chief Instructor Malcolm Phipps Sensei, 8th Dan.

For further details about the association, see the SSKI website,

More about the Old Basing Karate Club

Lead Instructor 5th Dan Peter Welch founded the Old Basing Karate Club in 2006. Since then, the club has not only produced several excellent black belts but has also had many students selected to represent the association as members of its prestigious squad.

Each year, SSKI enters the squad into major national competitions and has produced many medal winners, notably Cristy Nash who in 2010 became the WJKA European champion and the following year saw her take the WJKA world title! Old Basing club members have also won numerous gold, silver & bronze medals at the Portsmouth Open, the Shobu Ippon tournament at Guildford, the Legend Open at Bracknell and also SSKI's coveted Shotokan Shield in it's National competition.

* Each year, the UK's most senior & prestigious karate instructors run courses at the association's Honbu dojo at Hemel Hempstead.

All instructors are fully qualified, insured and are DBS (CRB) checked.
